White sandy beaches and blue waters, palm trees and coconuts, good food and great drinks. That about sums up Koh Lipe.
The island is located in the very south of Thailand, close to the border with Malaysia.
Visit beautiful Koh Lipe and experience the beauty of this island.
Because of the distance from the other islands in the Southern part of the Thai Andaman Sea, the island is one of the least visited, compared to Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and Krabi, but it is worth to make the journey there.
The island is part of 10 other islands of which Koh Lipe is the only one with hotels and other facilities, the other are uninhabited . Take a day trip to the surrounding islands, go snorkeling or diving or work on your tan on one of the many beautiful beaches.
Koh Lipe is just a small island, but offers amazing beaches. The island has 3 main beaches. Sunrise Beach, Sunset Beach and Pattaya Beach. And a handful of smaller private beaches.
Sunrise Beach is located on the east coast. This is the most popular beach, and my personal favorite. A very long stretch of soft white sand and palm trees.
Walk north to get away from the crowds for picture perfect empty beaches. Or stay near the bars and restaurants for some entertainment.
Sunset Beach is located on the west coast is the smallest beach of the three. And as the name suggests, it offers great sunsets. Sunset Beach is a 15 minute walk from town.
Pattaya Beach is where the boats arrive. For this reason the beach is quite busy, with lots of boats coming and going all day long. The beach is wide and there are plenty of restaurants and bars. Pattaya Beach has direct access to Walking Street and is therefore conveniently located and close to the action.
Koh Lipe is a great base for exploring the surrounding islands.
Koh Lipe is located within Tarutao National Marine Park and it offers great snorkeling, hiking and even more beaches.
Travel agents on the island offer full day boat tours to the islands. Prices start from 550 Baht and include snorkel gear and a light lunch with fruit.
The main street on Koh Lipe is Walking Street and offers everything your heart desires. Great food, bars, travel shops, souvenirs and more. It connects Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach and many hostels and guest houses are near it.
Do you bit for the environment and help out picking up trash around the island for a few hours. Trash Hero (link http://trashhero.org/ ) is an organization that helps to create sustainable, community-based projects that remove existing waste, and reduce future waste.
Where to Eat
Koh Lipe has amazing Thai food and a good selection of Western choices.
Walking Street has plenty of restaurants and will have whatever you are in the mood for. There are too many places to name, but just take a walk and you will come across a nice place.
Where to Stay
On Koh Lipe you will find great accommodation right on the beach or if you prefer to stay near walking street there is plenty of choice there.
Come & Go
Koh Lipe is located 60 km from main land Thailand. The closest ferry port is Pak Bara and the boat journey from there is about 1,5 hours.
From Krabi to Pak Bara is about 5 hours by mini bus.
You can also get to Koh Lipe from many other islands in the Adaman Sea like Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket.
Koh Lipe to Langkawi
There are 2 boats per day, one at 10.30 in the morning and another one at 16.30 in the afternoon. I took the one at 10.30 in the morning. I had to be at immigrations at 9.00 am on Pattaya Beach (turn right from Walking Street when you hit the beach).
Once you get there they will give you a ticket and call your name to report to the immigration officer. They keep your passport which you will get back on the boat. At 10.00am you will take a long tail boat to the speed boat which will take you to Langkawi in 1,5 hours. Upon arrival there you will go through immigrations again.
Taxi’s are waiting outside and will accept Thai Baht, I paid 400 bat to get to my hostel on Pantai Cenang Beach, the main area where all the hostels and hotels are located. It took about 15 minutes.
Good to Know
Thai and Malay tourist visit Koh Lipe during the weekend, it can get very busy. Try to visit during the week and avoid the weekends.
There are several ATM’s on the islands.
The island is small and easy to get around by walking, but there are motorbike taxi’s with a sidecar to take you wherever you want to go.
You need to pay a National Park fee of 200 Baht and a 20 Baht pier fee. You will be dropped off at a platform just off the coast of Koh Lipe and need to pay 50 Baht for a long tail boat to get to island.
Be prepared to jump in the water when arriving, as you the main boat will dock in at a platform and you will continue with a long-tail boat to the beach.
