More than just beaches – Saint Lucia

I have been to many Caribbean island (perks of my job working on a cruise ship). But Saint Lucia is one of my favorite islands and I was lucky to spend some time here. Though not your typical backpackers destination, I felt right at home here.

People flock to the Caribbean for the beautiful beaches. Which is great and Saint Lucia does deliver.
But if you want to do more than work on your tan, Saint Lucia is the place to be and offers an abundance of choices.
The island is just 27 miles long, but is packed with beauty and adventures.
You can climb the Pitons, zip line through the rain forest, stare in the crater of a volcano, stay in a hotel with no walls, dive with turtles and party the night away at the many street parties.

You actually get two island experiences for the price of one.
The south of Saint Lucia is very lush and green with a big rain forest, the Pitons and boutique hotels, while the north is very lively with many restaurants and bars, the capital Castries and the weekly Jump-up Street Party in Rodney Bay.

The Pitons

Saint Lucia

The Pitons are located in the south west of Saint Lucia, near the lovely town of Soufrière.
On the edge of the rain forest, these twin peaks are a majestic sight.
A world heritage site, these volcanic plugs can be climbed, but it is highly recommended that you do this with a guide.
Gros Piton is 771 meters (2,530 ft) high, and Petit Piton is 743 meters (2,438 ft) high.

Rain Forest and Waterfalls

In the south of Saint Lucia you can walk from the beach into the rain forest.
Hills, valleys, birds, waterfalls and zip lines!
Yes, zip lines! If you are feeling adventurous, you can enjoy a zip line through the rain forest.

A Drive-In Volcano

Saint Lucia has the only drive-in volcano in the world! A road will take straight into the crater.
The volcano is dormant, the last eruption was in the 18th century. You can get up close and personal with the steam and sulfur, and that lovely sulfur smell……. rotten eggs anybody?
Make sure to bring your swimming clothes, as there are hot springs right next to the volcano. Take a dip in the mud bath, which locals have say is good for your skin.

World Class Diving

The top dive sites in Saint Lucia are in between and around the Pitons. These are all shore dives, and of course great for snorkling too.
You will very likely spot turtles and sea horses and other wonderful marine life.

Saint Lucia

Fresh sea food and Michelin starred chefs make Saint Lucia the perfect place for fine dining.
A combination of French, West Indies and British result in a diverse menu.

The beaches in Saint Lucia range from small, secluded coves to long stretches that go on for miles. The best beaches are on the Caribbean side of the island.
From dark volcanic sand beaches to picture perfect white sand beaches, and everything in between.

Where to Stay

Ladera Resort. They even throw in a private pool!

Saint Lucia offers a diverse range of amazing hotels.
How about staying in a hotel room with only three walls? Be one with nature, while having a beautiful of the Pitons.
There are three hotels on Saint Lucia that offer this unique concept

  • Ladera Resort – The only hotel in Saint Lucia that is  located on a UNESCO World Heritage site and on a volcano! It is right in between the Pitons. You will have your own private plunge pool, that comes with a double swing above it!
  • Jade Mountain – They call your room a sanctuary. Do I need to say more?
  • Anse Chastanet – Located on tropical grounds, you will be surrounded by nothing but nature. Some of the rooms even have trees growing through them!

Though these prices are not for the backpacker-budget, if you want to splurge, this is the place to do it.
